66 % of business processes in German companies are not under control of the IT department, with a trend going towards 80 %. Thanks to MS Excel and Access a jungle of wildly grown business process implementation has grown in most companies. One third of all business processes are executed by emailing spreadsheets back and forth.
Authors say a reason for this mess are the fast changing business processes – too fast for IT departments to catch up. I would think the main reason is: too drastic expense cuts in IT to reduce measurable cost but at the end loose more money than has been saved initially. Who is measuring the effort of thousands of employees dealing with outdated spreadsheets and trying to consolidate data all the time ? Thus the question has to be asked: are we really on the journey to smarter work ?
